Zane is a Partner in the Sports, Media and Commercial team. He provides practical commercial advice to global brands, international sporting bodies and events and high-profile individuals. Zane specialises in intellectual property and the drafting and negotiation of commercial contracts including sponsorship, joint venture, merchandising, broadcasting, new media, agency, distribution, franchise and image rights agreements, venue agreements, IP and software licenses.
Zane has negotiated numerous lucrative sponsorship and supplier agreements and other event related contracts on behalf of sporting events and governing bodies including the PGA European Tour, Ryder Cup, World Marathon Majors, London Marathon, RideLondon and the All England Lawn Tennis Club (Wimbledon).
He is also the in-house Legal Counsel at Wimbledon advising all departments across the organisation (on a secondment basis).
He has drafted and advised on the agreements connected to high profile Premier League football transfer and renegotiations, and has successfully represented well-known players in disciplinary proceedings brought by the Football Association of England.
Zane is named as a recognised Sports lawyer in the 2019 edition of the Legal 500. He qualified as a solicitor in 2009.
He is a regular contributor to sports publications and author of the articles: "What effects have Fifa's Intermediaries and Regulations had on Player Representation and Commission Levels (published by LawInSport), "Qatar 2022: Have The Sunday Times Uncovered the Smoking Gun?", “The Fifa Ethics Committee: An Oxymoron?“ (for the professional body, aat ethics), "The David Moyes Sacking: The Financial Fallout for Manchester United", and "Are Match Officials Fair Game?” (published in the British Association for Sport and Law Journal).
Representative experience includes:
Advised the London and Surrey Cycling Partnership in relation to the establishment of the inaugural Prudential RideLondon, the UK's largest ever mass participation cycling event. We advised on the bidding and tendering process, delivery partner agreement, venue hire agreements and broadcasting media rights deals, and continue to draft and negotiate all sponsorship and supplier agreements.
Providing onsite assistance to The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) during The Championships, Wimbledon each year in relation to brand protection and ticketing. In addition to such work we advise AELTC year-round on the full range of commercial, contractual and intellectual property matters across all departments.
We advise the London Marathon on all aspects of their commercial programme for all of its events (including the London Marathon, Half Marathon, London 10,000, Westminster Mile, Great City Race and Swim Serpentine) including sponsorship and supplier agreements.
Successfully advised The All England Lawn Tennis Club in registering green and purple as colour trade marks in the United Kingdom, which further protects and enhances Wimbledon’s historic and iconic intellectual property.
