A woman from Peterborough, who was left severely injured after inadequate medical care following surgery, has been awarded £1.12m in damages at the High Court in London.
Mrs Darshan Banwatt, 58, who was a factory worker, suffered bleeding after gynaecological surgery and nearly died as a result. Although the operation itself was successful, she did not receive adequate post-operative care.
Mrs Banwatt suffered severe brain injuries which left her unable to talk or interact with those around her. Although her doctors diagnosed her as being in a persistent vegetative state, her husband refused to accept this and battled to help her recover. She is now able to communicate to a limited degree but still requires continuous care.
Two independent experts carried out a review of Mrs Banwatt's care and found that significant errors had been made. The NHS Trust involved admitted liability and publicly apologised for the inadequate care provided.
The High Court awarded Mrs Banwatt a lump sum of £1.12m together with £29,000 a year for the rest of her life. This will cover the high cost of her ongoing care.
