£8,500 Damages for Workplace Slip

Statistics show that slipping and tripping are the most common causes of injuries in UK workplaces. Last year, slips and trips resulted in nearly 11,000 major injuries.

A woman recently won damages after she slipped on some vomit and hurt her knee at the college where she worked. She was actually on maternity leave but was visiting her manager to discuss her return to work. She was walking down a corridor at the college nursery, holding her nine-month-old baby, when she slipped on the vomit, which had not been cleared up or cordoned off. In her efforts to protect her baby, she fell awkwardly and badly hurt her knee. Fortunately, the baby was unharmed.

The employer's insurance company eventually admitted liability and the woman was awarded compensation of £8,500.
